PURE Guest.008 Sync 24

Long-time veteran inherits and carries forward the UK electro scene.

Sync 24 is an electro artist and DJ, label boss of Cultivated Electronics and promoter of London based electro night Scand. He has recorded under the name MMT-8 with Ed DMX and Signal Type with Matt Whitehead, also been making sure that the electro sound pioneered in the early-80's by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Afrika Bambaataa (among others) remains the forward-thinking dance floor ammunition it always has been.

His first exposure onto the electro scene as Sync 24 was in 2003 when he had two releases on Andrea Parker's label Touchin Bass. In 2007, he started his own label Cultivated Electronics and releasing his own material along with artists as diverse as E.R.P, DMX Krew, James T. Cotton, Radioactive Man, The Exaltics, Morphology and Silicon Scally aka Carl Finlow. The label is now an established underground purveyor pushing the electro sound for over a decade.

Sync 24's production and mixes combine dark and moody with the funk, and his mix for Resident Advisor "RA.614 Sync 24" has perfectly showed all of these elements in an old-school electro style. His mixes are always geared towards getting the party moving! With releases on Electrix Records, Solar One Music, CPU Records and Cultivated Electronics, his music is being championed by respected DJ's such as Dave Clarke, DJ Stingray and Helena Hauff.

Sync 24's long-standing relationship with electro, while electro's fundamentals haven't changed much down these years, it remains one of electronic music's most potent dance floor sounds. Part of the future never dies. Recent music from stalwarts such as DJ Stingray, The Exaltics and newcomers like Shanti Celeste prove it's a style that continues to find favour with dance floors over 30 years since its inception.

Now it's time to turn the spotlight firmly on his new solo album "Inside The Microbeat," some of them are firmly primed for the dance floor, there's also more experimental beat-work, as Sync 24 drives you through his own intimately constructed landscape. The album will release on the 3rd of November.

Could you give us a quick background of your life? Where you’re from, how music followed you, and where you’re at now? When did you start DJ and what was the fate of the beginning?

I was born in Los Angeles and moved to the UK when I was 6. I started listening to dance music when I was around 12. Starting out with Hip Hop, Drum and Bass, House and things like The Orb and Ninja Tune. Drum and Bass was my favourite genre in my early teens and was the music I learn to mix with. I started out with a cheap pair of belt drive turntables and was lucky enough to convince my father to buy me some Technic 1200's when I was 16. Around this time was when I first introduced to more Electro style stuff like Drexciya, Carl Finlow, Anthony Rother and Mr Velcro Fastener and fell in love with the sound. I moved top London when I was 19 and started promoting my own Club night Scand.

Do you think there has been a Soundscape surrounding you since your childhood? Does it influence your preferences towards certain timbres or atmospheres while you select tunes?

I think Drum and Bass really shaped the sound and tone of a lot of my productions.  I loved the dark atmospheres and spooky pads that I was hearing from artists like Dom & Roland, Technical Itch & Decoder and these sounds have stuck with me through to my latest work. I also took a lot from Techno. I love the hypnotic repetitive vibe from artists like Jeff Mills and Robert Hood and really try to create this feeling in my tracks. Dark Drum and Bass style tones over loopy Techno influenced Electro beats.

How and where was the mix recorded?

In my studio on my Pioneer CDJs.

Could you tell us the idea behind the mix? Any favorites you want to highlight?

This is a mix of lots of upcoming CE releases alongside a few new tracks I am digging at the moment. I have loads of great new releases coming from artists like DynArec, Lake Haze, Alonzo, Matti Turunen and Controlled Weirdness as well as new guests to the label like Armec and Sergey Timoshov so I wanted to please these tracks.

Would you like to use this occasion to introduce one of your album or tracks?

Yes. I am about to release my debut album on the 3rd of November. An 11 tracker on Cultivated Electronics which will be released as a limited edition triple colour vinyl as well as the standard black vinyl version. I played a couple of the tracks in this mix. The artwork for the record was done by an artist called Will Barras and a piece of the canvas will be available as exclusive addition to the limited edition colour vinyl bundle that you can purchase from the Cultivated Electronics bandcamp.

How do you think of the differences between the rave scenes around you (your country) and other countries (cultures) ? Have you ever been to one that left you a greatest impression?

I have promoted club nights in London for over 20 years though my club night Scand and the Electro scene in the UK has definitely become more prominent in recent years with the resurgence of the genre. My favourite city to play in is Berlin. I think this city is where I have the best reception to my sound and find it suits the late night early morning club format of the city. I have also seen great energy across a lot of Eastern Europe and Russia in countries and cities like Poland, Kyiv, St Petersberg and Belgrade.

Apart from DJ, how would you define your role in the entire rave scene?

I look at myself firstly as a producer as this is my main love. Through the label I just enjoy pushing the sound that I love and DJing is another way of doing this. Electro is something I will always cherish and continue to push so I hope to continue to be a respected purveyor of the genre within the scene.

Which artists or labels have pricked your ears recently? Could you share with us some of your favorite movies or artists?

Right now there is so much great music being made which is awesome. Some labels I like are Mechatronica, CPU Records and Clone Records. Artist wise there are too many to mention but a few newer names that spring to mind are P.R.Z, Client_03, Kerrie, CRYK, Isolated Material, OBZERV and Cyphon alongside artists and DJs such as Maelstrom, Alienata, The Exaltics, Silicon Scally aka Carl Finlow, The Advent, Dexorcist etc., that are always on rotation in my sets, on my labels and collaborations.
